Is Venom a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe MCU or not

Buying the cinematic rights to the Spider-man franchise when Marvel was down was a pretty fortunate move for Sony. The 5 Spider-man movies (original Sam Raimi trilogy and the two Amazing Spider-man movies) have grossed ~$4 bn on the box office.

As per details, Sony has agreed to Tom Holland’s Spider-man being part of the MCU for 5 movies (Civil War, Homecoming, Homecoming 2, Infinity War, and Avengers 4). Marvel would serve as the creative heads for the 2 standalone movies (in terms of defining and presenting the character), but would have no financial play (movie is produced and distributed by Sony, as are any profits reaped). Conversely, Sony would have no play at all in the 3 Avengers movies (either creative or financial).

In the meantime, any person with a bit of business acumen would have realized a) the current superhero hype, the popularity of movie-verses, and c) how universally adored Spidey is.

To take advantage of the same, Sony decided to build their own franchise around the world’s most beloved web-slinger. Starting with Venom in 2018, 3 more movies are lined up - Silver and Black (2019), Nightwatch, and Morbius, The Living Vampire. In between Venom and Silver and Black, we will also get an animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This microverse would not share anything with the MCU, with the exception of the bravest Avenger.

If you are wondering why it took so long for spider-man to reach the MCU it’s because Sony owns the rights to spider-man. Movies like avengers (MCU) are not Sony movies therefore spider man did not appear until Marvel and Disney worked out a way to get the permission from Sony to put Spider-man into the MCU universe. Very complicated to read I know but the same is the case for Venom.

If you watch the trailer for the Venom movie one of the first logos you will see is SONY written all over it. This means that it will not relate at all to what’s going on in the MCU whatsoever.

Until Disney and Marvel can get the rights to have venom in their movies, then we simply will not see him directly in the MCU. Just the way it goes with big media companies. Sucks.

Thanks for reading! Feel free to elaborate and correct any of my mistakes.
